Feature : Designing Your Logo

New businesses are often at a loss as to how to design a logo. Sometimes a number of designs are considered, and it is hard to settle on only one. The logo is important as it gives a clear indication about your target market. It should also hint, if possible, at your products, although some with just initials (ligatures) may be equally effective. Try to keep the following steps in the right order and use this process

Gather information

It's most important that you understand your target market before you even begin to think about designing a logo. A logo designed for older people or children may require the use of larger fonts. Some family-based services should present a neat image, whilst remaining friendly - and corporate based products are best presented with something ultra conservative. Teens to thirties will probably look with more interest and the wild and wacky.

So consider the following:

What is the average age of your target market?
What level of education do they have?
Male/female?
Ethnic group?
What does your product or service offer the customer, and what is its unique quality that sets it apart from competitors?
What type of image do you want to portray?
Do you prefer a graphic logo or a text logo?
What is the immediate first inpression you want your logo to give?
Will the logo be used on paper, on the web, on signboards?

Pick a font and test it out with the required words.Sometimes you need to test out a batch of fonts to be really sure what you're looking for.

Get inspired

Look at a number of other logos and decide if you like them, and why. Best places to look are on the web, magazines, the 'phone book etc.

If you then feel you can design the basic logo, go aheaf and do it. If not, then's the time to call in the graphic designers! At least by that stage you can tell them exactly what you want!
